Population in the border region has
grown quickly since 1970, especially in Tijuana, Baja California, and in Ciudad
Juarez, Chihuahua. These two cities have two of the highest concentrations of
maquiladora plants, with one-third of border plants located in Ciudad Juarez.
Population has increased by double-digit percentages in both 1970-80 and 1980-90.
Between
1979 and 1989, maquiladora employment has increased steadily ever year. Maquila
employment is highest in the cities of Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez. Total maquila
employment for the nation increased almost fourfold between 1979 and 1989, from
111, 365 to 429,725.
