ANTHROPOLOGY
OK, OK, an anthropologist this webmaster is not. But the disciplinary boundaries
of sociology and anthropology have considerable overlap, which is why th
e fields are so often
lumped together within the same academic department. For the most complete collection of
organized links, one might first stop
by either Anthro.Net or Richard Robbins' A
Guide to Internet Resources in Resources. Another site worth visiting is
Texas A&M's "Anthropology in the News,"
which is updated daily and includes archives of earlier stories. Even the
Internet is fair game for anthropological study--check out Cyberanthropology.org
for virtual seminars and databases. If some of the terminology is new to
you there is an Anthropology
Glossary online. For biographies of key figures in the history of the
discipline check out the "Anthropology
Biography Web" from Minnesota State University, Mankato. And to
search search for any author, name, subject, or cultural group written about in
the American Anthropologist from 1888 through 2000, take
advantage of the American
Anthropology Journal Archive Project.
In the summer of 2001 a real gold mine was put online by the California Academy of Sciences Department of Anthropology:
a database of 18,000 records and over 6,000 images. As described by Dinah
Crawford, curatorial assistant:
"The focus of our collection is on the indigenous cultures of North America
(exclusive of Mexico) and the Pacific Rim, including all Pacific islands and
East Asia. Current strengths of the collection are general holdings from the
U.S. Southwest and the Pacific Islands, and basketry from California. Earlier
years of collecting have yielded both ethnographic and archaeological materials
from East Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and Central and South America."
