Theatrical Scene Painting Drama 3315 Gilliam
Carving Sample Project
The first scenic artists told stories on cave walls. It is a tradition and craft that can be documented and traced throughout the history of civilization. By taking this class, you are learning foundational skills of an ancient trade. The question is, will the guild survive or be outsourced by large format, digital printers? The billboards and sign painters of yesterday are now the products of Photoshop and vinyl canvas. My belief is that there will always be a need for artists with scenic skills.
In todayÕs theatre, scenics need to know how to sculpt and create dimensional textures. To introduce and hone these skills, we will do a series of 3-D samples in class. I will assign each of you a specific sculptural object to explore in preparation for your production assignment in BLOOD WEDDING.
You will need to use a painter elevation as a model for you sculpture sample.
