LONDON, 1850

ACT ONE

 SCENE 1:  THE WORKHOUSE

 SCENERY & PROPS:  Long table for the boys.

Benches for table.
Wooden bowls
Wooden spoons
Boiler pot on fire with Gruel
Large stiring spoon
Ladle

“Food, Glorious Food”

PROPS:  Mr. Bumble’s brass-topped mace

SCENE 2:  WORKHOUSE PARLOUR (WIDOW CORNEY’S PARLOUR)

PROPS:  Table and Chairs
Tea pot, cups, spoon, etc.
Bumble’s pocket handkerchief
Cat basket
Cats
Oliver enters carrying a small bundle

SCENE 3:  UNDERTAKER’S PARLOUR

SCENERY/PROPS:  Door

Shutters
Painting  Gentleman with top hat.
3 coffins
Saw horse
Stool
Sign over the door (“Well, Oliver Twist, do you think you could look like that gentlemen up there?  Points to sign over door.)
Counter

“That’s Your Funeral”

PROPS:  Charlotte enters with plate of scraps (meager meat on the bones)
“Your bed’s under the counter.
Candle

 “Where Is Love”

SCENE 4:  UNDERTAKERS the next morning

PROPS: Loud kicking on the outside of the shop door.
Undo the door… chain and key
Bolts opens the door.
Noah eats thick slice of bread
“Open the blinds.  Oliver takes down the shutters.
Charolette enters with a tray of food. (bacon)

“Fight”

 PROPS:  Oliver is thrown in coffin, which is then locked
Charlotte pours water over Mrs. Sowerberry
Mrs. Sowerberry falls into coffin

SCENE 5:  PADDINGTON GREEN… a Road  (Boom?)

PROPS:  Oliver carrying a small bundle tied to a stick.
Sits on a milestone
Unties handkerchief and eats square piece of crust, center already eaten

Dissolves into Bustling Street Scene in London

SCENE 6:  THIEVE’S KITCHEN

 PROPS/SCENERY:  Walls and Ceiling of this basement room black with age and dirt
One side an old hob-fire
A frying pan on the fire secured to the mantelshelf by a string
Some sausages are cooking
Rickety stairway leading down from the street
Several rough beds made of old sacks are huddled side-by-side on the floor. 
Long toasting fork
“draw a tub near the fire for Oliver”
“drink your gin”
Handkerchiefs hanging in the room

 “Pick a Pocket or Two”

PROPS:  Snuff-box in one pocket of the trousers
Wallet in another.
Watch in his waistcoat
Diamond pin in his shirt
Spectacle-case and handkerchief in his dressing gown pocket
Walking stick
“put them all back in the box”
Weighing the wallets
2 large silk handkerchiefs, one red, one purple (“yellow and green!”???)
Sixpence\
Fagan boiling some coffee in a saucepan
Wooden spoon
Table
“He takes a small box from a trap-door in the floor. 
Gold watch with chain from the box
Swings it to and fro, in front of the bird cage stand
Basin of water on the fire to wash
Nancy drinks half the bottle of gin in one gulp

SCENE 1:  “THREE CRIPLES” PUBLIC HOUSE IN CLERKENWELL

SCENERY/PROPS:  Same as before

Down the stairs

?????  CHANGE OF SCENE  (As Mr. Bumble goes to exit – a bundle of rags stir in a corner of the back room.  Another bundle of rages is seen to be tending the first bundle.)

 SCENE 5:  BROWNLOW’S  A few days later.

SCENE 6:  LONDON BRIDGE AT NIGHT

SCENERY/PROPS:  Night watchman

His Bell
Thieves’ Kitchen door (Somewhere on stage)
Battering Ram to attack the door.
Sikes on Roof Top
Hussar takes out a gun and fires.
Sike falls

FINALE
