The MUNY '99 Scene Synopsis

May, June, and July 1776

Act I, Scene 1 The Chamber of the Continental Congress
BOOM 1
1-1 John Adams in front of Boom 1
         Opens to reveal
CHAMBER (May 8)

          “Sit Down, John”

 1-3 John comes Downstage as Congress freezes behind him and sings

         “Piddle, Twiddle, and Resolve”
1-4 John passes through the Chamber listening to a few lines then the Congress freezes

     ABIGAIL AREA
1-5 Abigail appears in John’s imagination... a separate area ... Congress freezes.  John and Abigail sing:

         “Till Then”
1-8 Congress unfreezes for end of scene.  Boom closes as John calls Franklin.

Act I, Scene 2 The Mall
BOOM 1
2-9  Benjamin Franklin sits on a bench having his portrait painted.
 
         “The Lees of Old Virginia”
2-16 End of song with Frnalkin, Lee and John exiting.  Boom opens to reveal

Act I, Scene 3 The Chamber
CHAMBER (June 7)
3-47 Congress adjourns.  John, Franklin, Sherman, Linvingson, and Jefferson  move downstage to sing

         “But Mr. Adams...”
3-53 End of song all exit except Jefferson who heads for his lodgings

I.4 Thomas Jefferson’s Room and High Street
4-54 John and Franklin enter on the street below Jefferson’s room, climb the stairs and enter.
JEFFERSON’S ROOM
4-57 John and Franklin exit room to
HIGH STREET
 Night as the light in Jefferson’s Room goes out on cue.
4-58 Abigail appears
     ABIGAIL AREA

         “Yours, Yours, Yours”
4-60 End of song, Abigail disappears as Franklin enters.  It is the next day.
4-62 Shutter opens and Martha appears.  Dialogue between Jefferson’s Room and Street
4-63 Martha comes down to Street

         “He Plays the Violin”   DANCE
4-67 Jefferson appears with violin and Martha goes up to the room.  Franklin and John finish the song.  At the end of the scene, Congress comes up already in session.  We may need to change this begining if we cannot conceal The Chamber.  Perhaps use the revolve for High Street and back to Chamber.

I.5 The Chamber
CHAMBER (June 22)

         “Cool, Cool Considerate Men”  DANCE

         “Momma, Look Sharp”
5-82 End of Song.
BOOM 1

INTERMISSION

II.1 A Congressional Anteroom
BOOM 1
6-83 At the conclusion of the entracte, Hancock and Thomson’s Voice are heard in the Dark.  Then lights come up on Jefferson outside of the Chamber in the Anteroom listening through the door to the reading of the Declaration.  The door opens from time to time to allow us to hear and see the proceedings.

         “The Egg”

 6-87 Franklin, Jefferson and John go into the Chamber

II.2 The Chamber
CHAMBER (June 28)
7-90 Freeze or time passage as McNair changes calendar to June 29
7-91  John and Franklin come downstage as Congress continues upstage in silence.
7-92 June 30
7-93 July 1
         “Molasses to Rum”

7-101 Abigail appears as before.  Congress freezes?
     ABIGAIL AREA
 
         “Compliments”
7-103 John turns back to the Congress

         “Is Anybody Out There?”

7-107  Time change... lighting from night to day.
7-116 July 4
