Anton Checkhov
1894-1904

Anton Checkhov was born in Taganrog, Russia. He is best known for his short story writing, but wrote four major plays: Uncle Vanya, The Three Sisters, The Seagull, and The Cherry Orchard. His plays were produced at the Moscow Arts Theatre where Konstantin Stanislavsky acted (even as Gayev in the first production of The Cherry Orchard). Even though he did not live long enough to see the Bolshevik Revolution, his plays served as a great commentary on the social aspects of the time which led to the revolution.
