Up here in the White Mountains the foliage colors are coming on early this year. The early colors are usually the reds followed by the orange and yellows. The
hotels and restaurants are booked more heavily in the foliage season
than any other time of year.
I lost all my beautiful New Guinea Impatiens about a month early this year (2014). This loss is due mainly to one exceptionally cold night that most likely also triggered some of the early color changes taking place in front of my desk in in Autumn 2014.
I've not yet archived my Autumn 2014 pictures. Hence many of the pictures below are from Autumn 2013 that I've not previously copied into my tidbits files. The foliage in Fall 2014 is more spectacular than in 2013 or any other year that I can remember in the White Mountains.
This is one of the best pictures I ever captured.
It's appropriate that above my flag is a mountain named Washington.
This shot was taken while I was standing by
our mailbox
A zoomed shot from my office window
This is how it looks unzoomed
From left to right it are the two Twin Mountains, Mt. Garfield, and Mt. Lafayette
Our driveway as seen from our north deck
This is a shot of our westward deck
These are the birch trees outside our garage
door
I use a tarp to keep moisture out of the
center of this old maple tree
The hill in the background is called Ore
Hill
Iron mines now boarded up once yielded iron ore that was packed on the backs of
mules
The mules carried the ore to a smelter where fine Franconia Iron stoves were
made in the 1800s
This is another view of Ore Hill in foliage
season
The North Kinsman mountain is in the background
This shot was taken from our mailbox
The historic name for our cottage is Brayton
Cottage in the 1900s when it was part of a resort
Winter was hard on this cranberry bush that
we eventually lost in 2014
In 2012 we had a disastrous late snow storm
on Memorial Day that toppled tree tops
Below is a tree top that still lays far off the ground on other trees in our
woods
I don't know how to safely get this broken tree top to the ground.
This is a maple tree in our wildflower field
Sunrise shot of our birch grove
This is the view to the west toward Vermont
from our bedroom
My friend and former colleague Ben Plumber
took this picture while visiting New Hampshire
It won't be long until we see snow on Mt.
Washington
This is one of the best pictures I ever captured.
It's appropriate that above my flag is a mountain named Washington.
