Here’s What Educators Should Expect From the Biden Administration on Education Technology ---

Jensen Comment
Education technology will make free college initiatives of President Biden more cost effective since our top public universities have little capacity for meeting demand spikes for in traditional classrooms on site when their diplomas are free. My online friends point out that decades ago some universities like UCLA and Cal-Berkeley were virtually free in terms of tuition and fees. But in those days top universities kept enrollments down with admission barriers. In 2021 we are seeing those admission barriers being torn down, such that education technology is literally the only way of meeting a surge in demand for free college on a massive scale.

I recently watched the Ken Burns PBS series on the history of national parks. Ken Burns lavishes all sorts of praise on John Muir for his being the primary person for setting the USA's National Park System in motion. We may not yet have a national park system had it not been for John Muir. Apparently all the good Muir did for environmentalism cannot offset a few remarks about the laziness of native Americans of his time. Racism is no longer a criterion. It is The Criterion that outweighs all other criteria upon which we measure contributions to society.

What's interesting about namesakes is that Lincoln is now also being disgraced for racism in spite of all he did to free the slaves --- University of Wisconsin-Madison Student Government Votes Unanimously to Remove Statue of Abraham Lincoln ---

At the turn of the turn of the 20th Century Henry Ford was a racist who invented the Model T assembly line and later versions of Ford factories. Because he was a racist, should Ford vehicles and assembly lines accordingly have been banned from this earth? In 1962 James Watson along with Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material". Because Watson is a racist his DNA discoveries should his DNA discoveries have been banned from science and medicine? Since statistical inference was advanced greatly by such racist as Sir Ronald Fisher, should statistical inference be banned from science and university curricula?

The USA became Lake Wobegon --- all of our college applicants are assumed to be above average. Having an essay requirement for any college admission test might destroy the myth that all applicants can write and think critically. Besides colleges now are doing away with any admissions tests. I don't know how they filter out the best/worst of the tens of millions of grade inflated high school graduates --- especially under Biden's initiative to make all public colleges free.

But future student debt forgiveness may help all colleges. Biden claims he will also make all public universities free. This can be good news and bad news for private universities. The good news is that many students will transfer to private universities as public universities become overcrowded. The bad news is that it's tough to offer a fee-based product or service when that service is free elsewhere.

Another illustration of how mathematicians  and scientists will spend entire careers on theory having little known relevance to practical issues. My own doctoral professor, Yuji Ijiri, claimed he would trade his life if he could solve the Four Color Theorem. Fortunately, he did not spend his entire career trying to prove this one theorem. Yes I do know that sometimes discoveries have little relevance at the time become very important in future states of the world. God bless all of these researchers who will devote their lives to knowledge for the sake of knowledge. Many economists devote their lives to research in economic worlds that do not exist and are unlikely to ever exist. Debates frequently center upon robustness of their findings under real-world weaknesses of their assumptions such as real world maps of nations that do not meet the limiting assumptions of the Four Color Theorem.

Liberal economist Paul Krugman and Fed Chairman Janet Yellen are yelling that almost no jobs will be lost with a $15 immediate increase in the minimum wage across all 50 states. Their screams overlook some  of major arguments against more than doubling the minimum wage. Firstly, there's an enormous underground economy where employers seeking to pay no benefits (think medical insurance, Social Security benefits, and unemployment compensation) and often are seeking lower wages by hiring below minimum wage, especially in such trades as child care, house cleaning, landscaping, food services, farms, ranches, construction, roofing, stolen car chop shops, etc. Law enforcement often overlooks this underground economy since it supports millions of children both in the USA and in the home countries of undocumented underground economy workers. What Krugman and Yellen are overlooking is that the underground economy may grow by leaps and bounds with a a doubling of the minimum wage, especially when combined with the Biden/Harris open border initiatives.

Secondly, their arguments overlook living cost differences across every inch of the USA. A $15 minimum wage is probably not enough in NYC, Boston, Atlanta, Dallas, Austin, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, etc. The $15 minimum wage is too much of a shock in the majority of very remote and rural places where rents are cheap and small businesses are struggling to survive whele existing much lower wages. I live in a rural mountain region where our closest Walmart and other big box stores pay more than $15 per hour. But there are many more jobs in small (often seasonal) businesses, dairy farms, small inns, apple farms, etc. Dairy farms are a good example where many dairy farms are folding even at much lower minimum wages paid to workers ---
https://www.vpr.org/post/they-should-include-us-vermonts-immigrant-farmworkers-push-coronavirus-aid#stream/0
There are just not enough jobs in big corporations up here to absorb all the rural workers, especially part-time workers in very small and very struggling businesses.

There's also a question of timing. Hitting businesses on the verge of bankruptcy due to loss of revenue in this pandemic will easily be the straws that break camels' backs in 2021 and 2022. At least wait until the economy recovers from Covid-19.

It's ludicrous to promise that an immediate doubling of the minimum wage will not result in millions of job losses combined with a spike in the underground economy for labor.

Cryptocurrency salaries revealed: From $60,000 to $400,000, here's how much you could earn working in cryptocurrency ---

Much like the currencies themselves, jobs in the crypto world are growing.

An analysis by job search engine Monster found that job postings with the terms "cryptocurrency," "blockchain," or "bitcoin" grew almost 200% from 2017 to 2018. In 2020, LinkedIn named blockchain as the most desired skill among companies when searching for new applicants.

Cryptocurrency has been around since 2009, when bitcoin was introduced. Since then, the crypto world has exploded. Now, thousands of cryptocurrencies are available, and products supporting these cryptocurrencies — wallets, trading platforms, and so on — are readily accessible to anyone interested in the decentralized investment.

Using data from the US Office of Foreign Labor Certification, Insider examined salaries to understand how much employees can make in the crypto universe. Our analysis included nearly 300 visa applications for both crypto-focused jobs at big companies like Facebook and Forbes to crypto-focused companies like Coinbase.

It's worth noting that the H-1(B) data only provides salary information, and does not include other types of compensation and benefits that employees may receive in their roles, like bonuses, performance awards, or benefits.

Let's dig into the types of jobs in the cryptocurrency industry, how much they pay, and who is currently hiring.

You typically have two options when looking to work with crypto: You can get a technical job working with cryptocurrency and blockchain, or you can get a more general role at a cryptocurrency company.

Professionals in fields like human resources, project management, or management can work at companies that all have business models built around cryptocurrency storage, investment, consulting, or purchase.

The company with the highest number of H-1(B) visas was Coinbase, which hired mainly engineers, but also data scientists, recruiters, and operations employees using the foreign worker visas.

Here are a few of the positions Coinbase hired, and how much it paid:

Here's an opportunity for academic research on accounting for payrolls paid in cash versus cryptocurrency. Are there differences in today's rules and should there be differences in future rules. One thought is that some companies that pay salaries in cryptocurrencies may be such large players that they influence the values of those currencies.

Application numbers to prestigious universities can be misleading. It takes time (think admission essay writing) and money (think submission fees) to apply to a prestigious university, and submissions are often avoided by students who think there is no hope of being admitted. And being rejected can hit ego quite hard.

An example, is a student who does not apply to MIT, Harvard, or Stanford who thinks there's more hope of being admitted to Columbia or NYU. Also some students have geographic preferences where Columbia and NYU are top schools when you have a NYC preference.

MIT, Harvard and Stanford are ranked 1, 2, and 3 by US News for 2020 as being the most selective USA universities ---
https://www.niche.com/colleges/search/all-colleges/?selectivity=extremelySelective&type=private&type=public

Columbia University in NYC comes in at Rank 12 among the most selective universities. New York University in NYC did not make the Top 40 in terms of being difficult to get into as a first-year college student.

My point here is that acceptance/rejection rates in college admissions can be misleading since many very good students do not apply to all top colleges.

Getting into a prestigious graduate school can be another matter.
I was rejected outright for being accepted to Stanford as a first-year undergraduate. Five years later I was given a full-ride (tuition, room, and board) scholarship to Stanford's Ph.D. program. I was even allowed to teach an accounting course in the Economics Department at Stanford for money on top of my scholarship. But I never forgot that I was rejected in my quest to be a freshman at Stanford.

You Are NOT Ready to Retire Until You Can Answer These 7 Questions (Successfully) ---
https://www.kiplinger.com/retirement/602069/you-are-not-ready-to-retire-until-you-can-answer-these-7-questions

Jensen Comment
Some things may be changing. President Elect Biden promises a national health care plan that could affect the timing of your retirement. For example, currently you're not eligible for Medicare until age 65 unless your are declared disabled. However, if a national health care plan is in place you might be able to better afford health care insurance if you retire long before before age 65.

A huge consideration at the moment is having enough income to fund years in a nursing home --- which the article points presently costs an average of $8,800 per month per person on Medicare (those not eligible for Medicaid). Nursing home insurance became outrageously expensive. Bernie Sanders, who just became head of the powerful Senate Budget Committee, has long promised that a national health plan will cover long-term nursing care. My point is that if Biden and Bernie get their way it will cost a whole lot less in retirement for medical and long-term nursing care even if you retire early.

On the opposite side of the coin, there's the worry of what inflation will do to living costs.
Liberal economists like Paul Krugman are now arguing that the USA can spend tens of trillions more on new social programs without causing high inflation. When Bernie Sanders was running for president he promised nearly $100 trillion in new social programs above the current $4.4 trillion in total annual federal spending.

It's no longer the desire of the majority of Americans, politicians, or liberal economists to restrain spending green initiatives, national healthcare, bailouts of all 50 states, free college, guaranteed sick leave for all workers, free childcare for all children, minimum income for all Americans, reparations, housing, food stamps, medications, etc. In my opinion that kind of spending will most certainly bring high inflation.

It would be foolhardy to plan for retirement without planning for high inflation.

https://www.thestreet.com/mishtalk/economics/janet-yellens-swiss-cheese-statements-on-the-us-dollar

. . .

Well La Dee Frickin Da

For starters, it is Fed policy and government fiscal policy that sets the tone for the US dollar.

Yellen can make whatever swiss cheese statements she wants but how would a central bank act if it wanted to sink the dollar?

Steps to Weaken a Currency

1.  Cut interest rates

2.  Engage in massive QE balance sheet expansion
(QE entails printing money in Quantitative Easing)

3.  Pledge to keep rates low indefinitely

4.  Pledge to ignore inflation and let it run hot to make up for alleged undershooting

5.  Encouraging more fiscal stimulus

The Jerome Powell Fed is five for five on doing the very things that would cause the dollar to sink and Yellen supports all of them.

Other counties are doing many of the same things and if they weren't the dollar would be dropping faster.

Regardless, please ignore her disingenuous, cheesy statements because actions speak louder than holes.

GOXEL --- https://goxel.xyz/
Goxel is a 3D drawing program that uses "Voxels" (short for "Volumetric Pixels," or cubes) to describe scenes. Most other 3D editing software (such as Blender) represents scenes as meshes of 2D triangles. Voxel-style art appears in a number of video games, most prominently Minecraft. In the Gallery section of the site, users can locate a number of examples that were created with Goxel. The Web Version link provides an in-browser version of Goxel that users can try out before installing the software on their computers. At the bottom of the Goxel front page, users will find a video where artist Thibault Simar builds a 3D castle in Goxel. The Download section of the site provides installers for Windows and macOS computers, as well as links to iOS and Android versions.

BRL-CAD SCIENCE --- https://brlcad.org/
BRL-CAD is a computer aided design system. It was originally created in 1979 at the U.S. Army Ballistic Research Laboratory to perform simulation and analysis of "combat vehicle systems and environments." It retains an emphasis on engineering analysis but has grown to become a general purpose system for both Computer Aided Design (CAD) and 3D modeling workflows. BRL-CAD follows the UNIX design philosophy of providing small, composable tools that can be combined as the user sees fit to support their workflow. Rather than providing a single monolithic application that seeks to solve every problem, BRL-CAD offers a set of purpose-built tools that exchange data in a set of common file formats. In the Gallery section of the BRL-CAD site users can locate examples created with the software. The Docs section includes both detailed reference materials and a variety of tutorials. The Download section of the site offers installers for Windows, macOS, Linux, and a variety of UNIX systems.
