Google & Coursera Launch Career Certificates That Prepare Students for Jobs in 6 Months: Data Analytics, Project Management and UX Design ---

We live in an age of less-than-total agreement as to the purpose of higher education. Should it immerse students in the best that has been thought and said? Provide an environment in which to come of age? Produce “leaders”? Or should it, as increasingly many argue, first and foremost secure professional futures? In the practice of recent decades, higher education has done a bit of each, to the satisfaction of some and the dissatisfaction of others. It has, in other words, become an industry subject to “disruption” by other players offering specialized solutions of their own. Take for example the new Career Certificates offered by Google and the online education platform Coursera.

“Designed to prepare learners for an entry-level role in under six months,” as Coursera CEO Jeff Maggioncalda explains it, these newly-unveiled Career Certificates “don’t have any prerequisites,” which means that most anyone interested in earning them can do so right now. This goes for “new grads landing their first job, front-line workers seeking stable employment, mid-career professionals making a pivot, or parents planning their return to the workforce,” and presumably myriad other walks of life besides.

There are thousands of courses available as MOOCs from the most prestigious universities in the world, and for a relatively small fee credits for completing the courses online can be obtained. The problem with MOOCs, however, is that most of the courses from prestigious universities are just too difficult for the mass market in need of easier courses and courses designed more for job preparation. MOOCs are better suited to scholars who already know a great deal about the subject matter being taught.

Usually the argument against a campus childcare center focuses on liability risk/cost. The reasons in the above article focus on things other than liability. I find the "place to park offspring" argument distasteful. However, the liability issue has always been worrisome for colleges. Often daycare operators operate at the extremes of pocket size. Some have small pockets that frustrate attorneys seeking to sue; Some have deep pockets such as when the State of Vermont provides day care centers for all eligible children --- thereby passing the liability risk on to all Vermont tax payers.

Motivation is a key factor in whether students cheat ---
https://theconversation.com/motivation-is-a-key-factor-in-whether-students-cheat-155274
I guess we could say the same as to why professors and others cheat as well, but to this day we don't really know why Professor Hunton (see below) cheated

The problem is that when you take away some motivations to cheat (think grades) you may be creating counterbalancing motivations. For me an eye opener was why over 60 students expelled by Harvard University cheated in a course when they were assured of getting A grade in advance. Their motivation cheating was that it was a waste of time to honestly do assignments in a course where they were assured in advance of getting an A grade. Time and time again some cheaters in life did so because of time management.

REPORT OF JUDITH A. MALONE, BENTLEY UNIVERSITY ETHICS OFFICER, CONCERNING DR. JAMES E. HUNTON
July 21, 2014 ---
http://faculty.trinity.edu/rjensen/Plagiarism.htm#ProfessorsWhoPlagiarize

Pursuant to the Bentley University Ethics Complaint Procedures (“Ethics Policy”), this report summarizes the results of an eighteen - month investigation into two separate allegations of research misconduct that were received by Bentley in November 2012 and January 2013 against James E. Hunton, a former Professor of Accountancy. The complainants – one a confidential reporter (as defined in the Ethics Policy) and the other a publisher – alleged that Dr. Hunton engaged in research misconduct in connection wit h two papers that he published while a faculty member at the University: “A Field Experiment Comparing the Outcomes of Three Fraud Brainstorming Procedures: Nominal Group, Round Robin, and Open Discussion,” The Accounting Review 85 (3): 911 - 935 (“Fraud Br barnstorming”) and “The Relationship between Perceived Tone at the Top and Earnings Quality,” Contemporary Accounting Research 28 (4): 1190 - 1224 (“Tone at the Top”).

Because of concerns regarding Fraud Brainstorming that the editors at The Accounting Review had been discussing with Dr. Hunton since May 2012, the editors withdrew that paper in November 2012. Bentley received the allegation of research misconduct from the confidential reporter later that month. The confidential reporter also raised questions about ten other articles that Dr. Hunton published or provided data for while he was at Bentley, which, the reporter alleged, raised similar questions of research integrity.

In my role as Ethics Officer, it was my duty to make the preliminary determination n about whether the allegations warranted a full investigation. To make that determination, I met with Dr. Hunton in person when Bentley received this allegation, after I first instructed Bentley IT to back up and preserve all of his electronic data store d on Bentley’s servers. During that meeting, we discussed the allegation, I explained the process that would be followed if I found an investigation was warranted, and I described the need for his cooperation, including the specific admonition that he pre serve, and make available to me, all relevant materials, including electronic and paper documents. This information and these instructions were confirmed in writing to Dr. Hunton. Dr. Hunton resigned shortly after that meeting, which coincided with my de termination that a full investigation was warranted.

In January 2013 as the investigation was just getting underway, Bentley received the second allegation of research misconduct from the editor of Contemporary Accounting Research. The editor had contacted ted Dr. Hunton directly in November 2012 with concerns about Tone at the Top after the Fraud Brainstorming paper was retracted. The journal brought the issue to Bentley’s attention after the response it received failed to resolve its concerns. When Bentley received this second allegation, I informed Dr. Hunton of it, as well.

Continued in article

Jensen Comment
The last paragraph of the article suggests that Professor Hunton did not cooperate in the investigation to the extent that it is unknown if his subsequently retracted papers were also based upon fabricated data. The last paragraph reads as follows:

Bentley cannot determine with confidence which other papers may be based on fabricated data. We will identify all of the co - authors on papers Dr. Hunton published while he was at Bentley that involve research data. We will inform them that, unless they have independent evidence of the validity of the data, we plan to ask the journals in which the papers they co - authored with Dr. Hunton were published to determine, with the assistance of the co - authors, whether the data analyzed in the papers were valid. The various journals will then have the discretion to decide whether any further action is warranted, including retracting or qualifying, with regard to an y of Dr. Hunton’s papers that they published

Years ago Les Livingstone was the first person to detect a plagiarized Accounting Review article (back in the 1960s when we were both doctoral students at Stanford). This was long before digital versions articles could be downloaded. The TAR editor published an apology to the original authors in the next edition of TAR. The article first appeared in Management Science and was plagiarized in total for TAR by a Norwegian (sigh).

Do People Prefer Chatbots or Humans? It Depends ---
https://readwrite.com/2021/03/05/do-people-prefer-chatbots-or-humans-it-depends/

March 9, 2021 Reply from Glen Gray

The CSU and particularly my campus (CSUN) have been pretty successful in their chatbot use (e.g., among many other things to help students, it tells dad jokes). (https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2021-03-09/college-students-pour-out-emotions-amid-pandemic-to-bots)

The key sentences in the story are:

“…students feel “they’re not being judged by it and thus are willing to be more vulnerable to a robot than they might be to a person.”

““The students don’t tell their professors — they tell the bot,” Hughes said."

This doesn’t surprise me. I’m old enough to remember ELIZA, from the 1970s, (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ELIZA) that was a demonstration expert system that was like an automated psychotherapist. It was very simple program that looked for key words (e.g., mother, boss, husband, etc.) and asked a follow-up question (e.g., What is the issue with your mother?) ELISA was never meant to be a psychotherapist substitute, as such, the developer, Joseph Weizenbaum, was surprised and somewhat concerned that students enjoyed “talking” to ELIZA and were very forthcoming it what they told ELISA. It was all about trust—students trusted ELIZA because ELIZA was not judgmental.

Move ahead to 2018, USC computer science department had an interesting all-day conference on human-computer interactions. One presentation was a program that interviewed soldiers who returned to the USA from a tour of combat duty in Afghanistan. In a video, you see a female soldier being interviewed by a human therapist. The therapist asked questions like: Do you have nightmares? Trouble sleeping in general? Problems relating to family and friends? Soldiers never want to show any weakness, so they answer no to those types of questions. Then on the video, the same soldier is interviewed by a computer program (like a very advanced version of ELIZA). Her answers to the computer program were quite different compared to the answers to the human therapist. She did actually have a variety of PTSD-type of issues.

How to Mislead With Statistics

Americans without college degree dying 3 years earlier — even before COVID-19 ---
https://www.studyfinds.org/americans-without-college-education-die-earlier/

Jensen Comment
Would Labron James have had a longer life expectancy if he'd earned a college degree before becoming an NBA superstar?

The misleading part of this study is that if a high school graduate who wants a longer life may be led to believe a good thing to do is extend life with a college diploma.

Firstly, this is misleading because there are many underlying causal factors of shorter longevity (think Down Syndrome or autism). It may well be that a larger portion of persons without college degrees are likely to have these life shortening factors. But not all people without college degrees have these factors such that a particular person without a college degree chosen at random has as much or more life expectancy than a Ph.D. or a medical doctor chosen at random.

Secondly, there are vast differences in college degrees that can affect careers that, in turn, affect life expectancy. Some college graduates have very stressful careers that can shorten life expectancy. Others have secure and relatively routine careers with low stress.

Thirdly, is a there a whole lot of difference in life expectancy between stay-at-home parents who have degrees versus those who have no degrees?  Many college graduates who spend full time raising their children at home get jobs afterwards that do not require college degrees.

MechanicalSoup --- https://mechanicalsoup.readthedocs.io/en/stable/
MechanicalSoup is a Python library that allows programs to interact with websites. Rather than running a full web browser, it combines the Requests library for http sessions and the BeautifulSoup library for HTML document parsing. This approach consumes fewer resources than a full browser would and does not require the installation of additional external tools. However, it also lacks a Javascript environment; so, sites that require Javascript to function will not work. The MechanicalSoup tutorial presents two examples of automated interactions with websites. In the first example, data is posted to a demo online order form. In the second example, MechanicalSoup logs in to GitHub and views the list of commits against a specified project. Several additional examples are available in the MechanicalSoup GitHub repository. The MechanicalSoup documentation also provides a detailed reference to the API. The FAQ provides some information on use cases for which MecahnicalSoup is well suited, along with links to other tools that may be more appropriate for other use cases. MechanicalSoup requires Python to run and can be installed via the Python pip tool.

TortoiseHg ---  https://tortoisehg.bitbucket.io/
TortoiseHg is a graphical frontend for the Mercurial distributed revision control system. It integrates with the system's file browser and provides context menu entries to manipulate files/folders under revision control. For example, users can right click on a managed folder and select context menu entries to pull new changes from upstream sources, commit their local modifications, push their changes upstream, and more. Using Mercurial's 'foreign VCS system' integrations, users can interact not just with Mercurial repositories, but also Perforce, Subversion, and Git repositories as well. The Quick Start Guide in the documentation provides a brief primer to get users up and running while the TortoiseHg in daily use section presents a detailed reference for common operations. In the Downloads section of the site, users can locate installers for Windows, macOS, and Linux systems.
